Fenerbahce have officially appointed former Turkish international midfielder Emre Belozoglu as their new head coach, marking his return to the Istanbul giants in a new managerial role. The 46-year-old takes over from Ismail Kartal, who stepped down at the end of October following a disappointing run of results. His arrival is expected to bring renewed stability and direction to a team struggling to meet expectations this season.
Kartal’s departure came after Fenerbahce suffered a painful 2-1 defeat against bitter rivals Galatasaray in the highly anticipated Intercontinental Derby. The result added to the club’s growing difficulties, with Fenerbahce now trailing league leaders Galatasaray by 10 points in the Turkish Super Lig. Their recent form has also raised concerns, as they have managed just one victory in their last five matches across all competitions, including a home defeat to Goztepe during Dirk Kuyt’s interim spell.
Belozoglu’s appointment represents a return to familiar surroundings for someone deeply connected to Fenerbahce’s history. The club views him as a figure who understands its traditions, expectations, and competitive identity. Having previously represented the team as a player, he now faces the challenge of restoring confidence, improving consistency, and bringing the club back into contention for major honours.
Before accepting the Fenerbahce position, Belozoglu was in charge of Kasimpasa, whom he joined in December 2025. During his tenure, he recorded 10 victories in 31 matches and guided the club to fifth place after the opening 10 rounds of the current campaign. His managerial experience also includes previous work at other Turkish clubs, while his playing career featured several prominent European teams.
Belozoglu began his professional career at Galatasaray in the late 1990s, winning the UEFA Cup in 2000 before moving to Inter Milan in 2001. He later played for Newcastle United, Atletico Madrid, Istanbul Basaksehir, and Fenerbahce, where he spent seven seasons across three separate spells. With 101 appearances for the Turkish national team, he brings considerable experience to his new role. Before officially taking charge of the squad, however, Dirk Kuyt is expected to remain in charge for Fenerbahce’s UEFA Champions League fixture against Liverpool on November 5.
