Real Madrid have reportedly identified Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen as a potential long-term successor to Thibaut Courtois. According to journalist Ben Fernandes Santos, the Spanish giants are closely monitoring the Dutch international as part of their long-term squad planning. Although Courtois remains a reliable presence between the posts, Madrid are aware that preparing for the future is essential as their current number one approaches the later stages of his career.
Verbruggen has attracted considerable attention through his impressive performances in the Premier League. His display against Manchester City was particularly outstanding, as he produced seven saves to help Brighton secure a clean sheet and a memorable victory at the Etihad Stadium. Facing one of the league's most dangerous attacking sides, the 24-year-old demonstrated his ability to perform under pressure and make crucial contributions in important matches.
Since joining Brighton from Anderlecht in 2023, Verbruggen has developed into one of the club's most dependable players. He has established himself as the first-choice goalkeeper at the Amex Stadium and has also become an important figure for the Netherlands national team. His quick reflexes, composure, and excellent distribution make him an attractive option for clubs seeking a modern goalkeeper capable of contributing to both defensive and attacking play.
Despite Madrid's interest, Courtois remains firmly established as the club's first-choice goalkeeper. At 34, the Belgian continues to deliver consistent performances and remains an important part of the team's plans. His contract runs until 2027, while discussions over a possible extension underline his desire to continue at the highest level. As long as his performances remain strong, there is little reason for Madrid to replace him in the immediate future.
Nevertheless, keeping track of Verbruggen represents a sensible move for Real Madrid as they prepare for the next generation of their squad. Identifying a suitable replacement before Courtois eventually leaves would give the club greater flexibility in the transfer market. While no immediate move appears necessary, Verbruggen's continued development at Brighton could make him an increasingly attractive candidate to become Madrid's next long-term number one.
