Fabrizio Romano has confirmed with his trademark “Here We Go” that Sporting CP have reached an agreement to appoint Paulo Fonseca as their new head coach, with Rui Borges set to leave the club next week.

Fonseca’s existing contract with Lyon runs until June 2027, but renewal negotiations between the two parties have completely stalled. Although Lyon are keen to retain him, the club’s difficult financial situation and strict financial monitoring by the DNCG (France’s football financial watchdog) mean they simply cannot continue to afford his substantial monthly salary of €350,000 to €400,000.
