Inter Milan are reportedly preparing to extend Federico Dimarco’s contract unilaterally until June 2028, using a clause that allows the club to prolong his current agreement by one year. The Italian wing-back is currently contracted until 2027, but the club are expected to activate the option before the end of the year rather than wait until the final deadline in May. The move would provide Inter with greater security over one of their important players as they continue planning for the future under coach Cristian Chivu. Although negotiations over improved personal terms have yet to progress significantly, the club appear determined to retain Dimarco regardless of his recent fluctuations in form.
According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, discussions between Inter and Dimarco’s representatives remain at an early stage, with the player’s new agent exploring the possibility of a more lucrative agreement. Dimarco is reportedly seeking a salary increase that would better reflect his importance to the team and his contributions over recent seasons. The proposed figure is believed to be around €7.5 million, although reaching that amount could prove difficult under the club’s current financial strategy. Inter are understood to recognise the player’s value and remain open to improving his existing terms, but the final offer is expected to fall within limits established by the club’s ownership.
Activating the extension clause would reportedly keep Dimarco’s annual salary at approximately €5.2 million unless a separate agreement is reached. Inter’s management considers the contract extension an important first step in protecting the club’s interests while leaving room for further negotiations. The decision would also prevent the player’s contract from entering its final year without additional security. However, any subsequent salary adjustment will depend on discussions between the two parties and the club’s assessment of its overall wage structure. Inter must balance rewarding one of their established performers with maintaining financial discipline across the squad.
The club’s ownership, Oaktree Capital, is understood to favour strict control over squad expenditure, making a significant salary increase more complicated. Although Inter are willing to recognise Dimarco’s years of service and importance to the team, the reported €7.5 million demand would represent a substantial commitment. The absence of Italy’s former Growth Decree tax incentives also makes the financial calculation less favourable, increasing the overall cost of a high-value salary agreement. As a result, the club are expected to approach negotiations cautiously rather than agree immediately to the figure discussed during preliminary conversations.
Despite the financial differences, there are reasons to believe that both sides could eventually reach an agreement. Dimarco has a strong personal connection with Inter, having grown up supporting the club, and his attachment to the Nerazzurri could play an important role in his decision. Meanwhile, there have been no clear indications of another club prepared to offer the salary he reportedly wants. Inter’s plan to extend his contract until 2028 would therefore provide a foundation for further discussions, even if a new salary agreement takes longer to finalise. The coming months will determine whether the club can reward Dimarco appropriately while remaining within Oaktree’s financial limits.
