Following Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Leipzig in the third round of the UEFA Champions League league phase, head coach Jose Mourinho said in an interview that even a 5-0 defeat would not have mattered ahead of El Clasico.

Reporter: Congratulations on the win today. How do you assess the match, particularly against a Leipzig side that performed exceptionally well in the first half?

Mourinho: “Very good, really very good. To be honest, Courtois played a crucial role. We know he is the best goalkeeper in the world. But, uh, I was expecting my team to have more control from the very beginning. We were unable to do that, and credit must go to Demichelis and the Leipzig players.

“They showed great consistency, ambition, and an ability to attack space, with excellent movement. Their wingers and Nkunku operating behind the striker caused us a lot of problems. But then we have that tremendous explosiveness — when the machine is running at full speed, it is very difficult for the opposition to stop us.”

Reporter: How enjoyable is it to see the team playing so fluidly, especially considering the attacking talent you have at your disposal? After the previous match against Sevilla, you scored some wonderful goals today and produced some beautiful team moves. The players seem to really enjoy playing together.

Mourinho: “Yes, I have been here for a little over three months. It is not as though I have been here for three years, but I think the way we play is positive. In the Champions League, as a player, you can feel that positive energy and the good feeling that comes with it, but at the same time, you also feel the pressure that comes from Real Madrid’s rich history in this competition.

“The players are enjoying themselves, and I am really happy because nine points from three matches represents very good progress.”

Reporter: We are all really looking forward to Sunday's match. How much momentum can today's performance and result provide heading into that game? What are your expectations for El Clasico?

Mourinho: “El Clasico is El Clasico. Even if we had lost 5-0 today, it would not have mattered. El Clasico is El Clasico — it is a match that the whole world looks forward to every year. Hopefully, it will be an absolutely spectacular encounter.”
