Borussia Dortmund have officially extended Niko Kovac’s contract, keeping the Croatian manager at the club until June 30, 2029. The decision reflects the club’s confidence in his leadership and their desire to maintain stability as they continue building a competitive team capable of challenging for major honours in the coming years.

Kovac took charge of Dortmund in the spring of 2025 when the team were struggling in 11th place in the Bundesliga standings. He quickly helped turn their fortunes around, guiding the side to a Champions League qualification spot on the final matchday of the season. His ability to improve results under pressure strengthened his position and established him as an important figure in the club’s long-term plans.

During the following campaign, Kovac led Dortmund to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga with 73 points. The achievement marked the fifth-highest points tally in the club’s history, underlining the progress made under his management. Across 53 Bundesliga matches in charge, he has collected 114 points, averaging 2.15 points per game. No other Dortmund manager has recorded a better points-per-match average in the competition.

The contract extension also highlights Dortmund’s commitment to consistency after a period of uncertainty. The club’s sporting leadership believes Kovac has steadily developed the squad and earned the respect of players and staff. By securing his future through 2029, Dortmund aim to preserve the foundations already established and give the coaching team greater confidence to pursue their ambitions without unnecessary disruption.

Kovac is equally determined to continue the project and build on the progress achieved so far. His priorities include developing a clear playing identity, improving the team’s overall performance and maintaining high standards in daily training. With both sides aligned on their vision for the future, Dortmund will hope that the extended partnership brings further improvement, sustained domestic success and stronger performances in European competition.
