Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka has received a suspended monetary penalty from Swiss authorities after admitting responsibility for obaining a COVID-19 vaccination certificate unlawfully. The experienced midfielder previously stepped away from the national team amid concerns about the vaccine and later issued a public apology, acknowledging that his decision had been a serious error in judgment.
Following an investigation by the public prosecutor during the international break, Xhaka was handed a penalty equivalent to 50 daily rates, amounting to CHF 3,000. The sanction comes with a two-year probtion period, meaning the fine will not have to be paid as long as he avoids further legal violations during that time. He has also paid the legal and procedural costs associated with the case.
Xhaka confirmed the outcome through his personal social media account after providing a full statement to the prosecutor's office. He reiterated his willingness to accept the consequences of his actions and made it clear that he understood the seriousness of the matter. Rather than challenging the decision, the midfielder chose to take responsibility and bring the legal proceedings to a close.
The case attracted attention because of Xhaka's position as captain of Switzerland and his reputation as one of the country's most prominent footballers. His earlier apology reflected his recognition that personal concerns about vaccination had influenced his judgment. He also expressed gratitude for the messages of support he received during the difficult period, noting how much the encouragement had meant to him.
At club level, Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris has indicated that the matter is now considered resolved within the team. The French coach reported that Xhaka was in a positive mental state and working hard in training ahead of Sunderland's upcoming match against Brighton. With the legal process concluded and the club treating the situation as settled, the midfielder can turn his attention back to football and his responsibilities on the pitch.
