Barcelona and Real Madrid Prepare Mega Offers as Manchester United Face Fight to Keep JJ Gabriel

Manchester United could face a major battle to retain one of their most promising young talents, with 16-year-old JJ Gabriel reportedly considering a departure from Old Trafford in January 2027. The teenager has attracted growing interest from several European giants, with Barcelona and Real Madrid emerging as the most aggressive contenders. His situation has become particularly notable because United had been considering him for a Carabao Cup fixture against Brighton, where he could have made history as the youngest player to represent the club.

Despite his age, Gabriel is already attracting significant attention in the transfer market. Reports indicate that he has expressed a desire to leave Manchester United as a free agent in January, although the club still has a contract with the player. Barcelona and Real Madrid are reportedly prepared to offer lucrative packages containing substantial wages, bonuses and signing-on payments in an effort to convince the young midfielder to continue his development in Spain.

Manchester United remain hopeful that the situation can still be resolved, particularly because Gabriel is contractually tied to the club. His eligibility to move abroad, however, could make negotiations more complicated. Gabriel holds both British and Irish passports and could potentially obtain Cypriot citizenship through his mother, which may provide greater freedom of movement within the European Union and make a move to a major European club considerably easier.

Barcelona have already taken a particularly close interest in Gabriel. The youngster reportedly spent part of an extended international break training in the Catalan club's environment and has also held discussions with representatives there. Real Madrid are meanwhile preparing their own approach, while Bayern Munich have continued exploring the possibility of signing him. Paris Saint-Germain are also monitoring developments, although the French champions appear to be taking a more cautious approach before deciding whether to make a formal move.

The growing interest places Manchester United in a difficult position as they attempt to protect a player viewed as a major prospect for the future. Gabriel's age, contractual situation and potential European eligibility have combined to create a complicated transfer scenario, while the financial strength of Barcelona and Real Madrid could make their proposals difficult to ignore. For United, preventing the teenager from leaving may now require convincing him that Old Trafford remains the best place for his long-term development.
