Barcelona reportedly explored the possibility of signing Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol toward the end of 2025. The Croatia international was viewed by Barcelona’s sporting department as a potential solution to their defensive needs, particularly because of his ability to operate in more than one position.

Gvardiol’s versatility was considered one of his biggest advantages. Primarily a centre-back, the 24-year-old can also play at left-back, giving Hansi Flick greater tactical flexibility. His physical strength, technical ability and confidence when carrying the ball out from defence also fit the type of defender Barcelona were looking for.

Despite the player’s attractive profile, Barcelona eventually concluded that a transfer would be difficult to complete. Gvardiol had no clear intention of leaving Manchester City, while the Premier League club continued to view him as an important part of its long-term plans. His strong standing within the squad made negotiations even more complicated.

The financial side of the deal presented another obstacle. Gvardiol already earns a significant salary, while City are reportedly prepared to improve his contract. The defender has remained a regular under Pep Guardiola and continues to feature in the club’s plans following the change in manager, further reducing the possibility of a move to Barcelona.

Barcelona had made an approach to assess Gvardiol’s situation, but the response did not provide much encouragement. With the player considering a new contract at City and showing little interest in moving away, Barça were forced to look elsewhere. One alternative reportedly being considered is Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni, who could emerge as another option for strengthening the club’s back line.
