Liverpool are reportedly ready to compete with Manchester United for the signing of Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde when the January transfer window opens. The 22-year-old Spain international was previously liked with United during the final stages of the summer transfer window, but ultimately decided to remain at Barcelona. His situation has since become increasingly difficult, with Balde falling behind Xavi Espart and Joao Cancelo in the club’s current left-back pecking order.

Balde has yet to make a single appearance this season, while 19-year-old Espart has started every La Liga match so far. Cancelo was also preferred for Barcelona’s Champions League opener against Feyenoord, leaving Balde with limited prospects of regular first-team football. His lack of playing time could therefore push him to reconsider his future when the transfer market reopens, with Manchester United and Inter Milan already reportedly monitoring his situation.

Liverpool are now believed to be considering a move of their own, helped by their positive relationship with Barcelona following Ronald Araujo’s recent loan move to Anfield with an option to buy. Balde could reportedly be available for around £34 million, although Liverpool would need to weigh up the risks surrounding his fitness and lack of competitive minutes. His technical quality and ability to control the ball remain attractive, but his recent injury problems could make a permanent deal a significant gamble.

Manchester United also have clear reasons to pursue another left-back. Luke Shaw has remained a regular starter when fit, but a recent minor injury forced him to miss the last two matches, leaving Patrick Dorgu to cover the position. Dorgu’s defensive weaknesses were exposed against Manchester City, highlighting the need for stronger competition. A loan deal with an option to buy could be an appealing solution for United, allowing them to assess Balde’s physical adaptation to the Premier League before committing to a permanent transfer.
