AR Officials Suspended After Controversial Haaland Goal in Manchester Derby

According to reports from The Daily Mail, The Athletic, BBC, The Mirror, and other media outlets, VAR referee Matt Donohue and assistant video assistant referee (AVAR) Blanco Antrobos will be suspended from officiating duties this weekend following the Manchester derby played yesterday. Neither official has been included in the referee appointments for this weekend’s Premier League matches.
The decision was made by Chief Refereeing Officer Howard Webb and the refereeing management team. The two officials are expected to remain unavailable for selection until at least after the upcoming international break.
In Manchester United’s 0-1 defeat to Manchester City, Erling Haaland scored a goal, but the assistant referee initially raised the flag for offside. VAR then reviewed the incident and ruled that Haaland was not offside, concluding that Enzo did not touch the ball and recommending that the goal should stand.
The statement added that VAR officials “failed to recognize that Enzo’s position could have affected the play and should have recommended an on-field review for the referee.”
