Juventus Make Decisive Move for Vicario as Spalletti Pushes for Quick Deal

According to Italian media outlet Calciomercato, Juventus have made decisive progress in their pursuit of Guglielmo Vicario, with Luciano Spalletti hoping to complete the signing this week.

With less than a week remaining before the start of the new Serie A season, Juventus have finally ended their hesitation and identified their new goalkeeper — Vicario. After ruling out Japan international Zion Suzuki and reconsidering Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martínez, the goalkeeper who had long been on Juventus’ shortlist has once again become the leading candidate and is expected to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for the new season.

Vicario had never truly left Juventus’ transfer radar. However, Spalletti’s comments on August 1 — “We need to understand why a team like Tottenham decided to put him on the bench” — suggested that the Italian goalkeeper might not have been Juventus’ top priority at the time.

Nevertheless, as time became increasingly limited and other options fell through, Juventus quickly launched a decisive move for Vicario last Sunday after another failed attempt to sign Martínez. This explains why the Bianconeri have accelerated negotiations in recent days.

Details of Vicario’s potential move to Juventus

Tottenham are open to completing the transfer through a loan deal, but they would prefer to include an obligation-to-buy clause. The two clubs could eventually reach a compromise by agreeing on an initial loan with an option to buy, which would become mandatory once certain conditions are met.

Those conditions could be related to Vicario’s individual performances, such as the number of appearances, or team achievements, including final league position, qualification for European competitions, or winning trophies.

Negotiations between the two clubs are now at an advanced stage, and the 29-year-old Vicario is eager to return to Italy. If talks continue smoothly, the deal could be completed within the next few hours, allowing Spalletti to use the goalkeeper in Juventus’ Serie A opener against Frosinone on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Michele Di Gregorio is reportedly no longer part of Juventus’ long-term plans.
