Atlético Madrid had been considered one of the strongest contenders for Gomes, but negotiations with Wolves failed to reach an agreement. As a result, Atlético opted to strengthen their squad by signing Sporting Lisbon's Morten Hjulmand instead, leaving the path clearer for Manchester United.

United have wasted little time in reviving their pursuit, with reports indicating that club officials have already flow Gomes' representatives to discuss a potential move. The response has reportedly been positive, as the player is believed to be open to continuing his career in the Premier League rather than competing in the Championship with Wolves next season.

Any deal, however, is expected to require a substantial financial commitment. Wolves are believed to value Gomes at between £40 million and £50 million, a figure that reportedly fits within Manchester United's current transfer budget.
